Completed in 1986 after nearly a decade of work and $965 million (in today's dollars), the MFTF-B was at the time the largest superconducting magnet ever built — wound from 30 miles of copper and niobium-titanium wire, cooled to -425°F with liquid helium, capable of generating magnetic fields 150,000 times Earth's. Designed to confine plasma at 500 million degrees Kelvin for nuclear fusion research.
It was shut down the day it was dedicated. The Reagan administration's budget cuts mothballed the machine before it was ever turned on. The components were eventually scavenged for other projects; the building was demolished in 2005.
